Thuja is an evergreen tree from the cypress family and symbolizes longevity. In Greek its name means “tree of life”. This name is still used today. It is therefore not surprising that the age of the oldest thuja specimen found so far has been estimated at 1,650 years old. As an ideal tree for hedges, it can be found in many gardens. It is also known as the ‘northern white cedar’, which is actually misleading as thuja does not belong to the cedar family. Thuja essential oil is yielded from the soft green twig tips.
Twigs for our essential oil are collected in a carefully preserved home garden in the vicinity of Maribor. Twigs contains 0.5 – 1.0% of essential oil of a pale yellow color. As oil is very strong, it is not recommended to be used undiluted.
The smell of thuja essential oil is pleasant and sweet, so not surprisingly it is used in the perfume industry and in disinfectants. It is also excellent in refreshing our homes. And a walk in the forest rich with thuja trees is reminiscent of old times…
